The congress was given the motto "Calling on Science" in order to emphasize that scientific progress today goes hand in hand with progress towards the reduction, refinement and replacement of experimental animals (the 3-R's).
The program itself promises to be somewhat "alternative" as well: the first three days will address alternatives and the use of animals from different angles in specific day themes as follows:
DAY I: INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES, CONCEPTS AND APPROACHES...addresses broad concepts, approaches and strategies, integrating new technologies such as genomics, proteomics, metabonomics and systems biology approaches.
DAY II: AREAS OF ANIMAL USE
...includes basic research, development of pharmaceuticals, safety assessment of specific product types and biologicals including vaccines. It also covers new developments in education and training and multi-annual animal welfare action plans and large-scale testing programs.
DAY III: PROGRESS IN LIFE SCIENCE DOMAINS...addresses basic and applied research and specific hazard endpoints, including animal welfare science and environmental science.
HALF DAY IV: 50 YEARS AFTER RUSSEL & BURCH...highlights scientific developments relevant to the 3-R's, with emphasis on the exponential progress in recent years, its implications for science, public health, and animal use and welfare. 2009 is marked not only by the 50th anniversary of Russel & Burch's definition of the 3-R's, but also by the European deadline for phasing out animal testing for cosmetics and the start of the REACH chemical test program.
Today we are at cross-roads where major policy decisions have to be made. Global collaboration is essential to reach the ultimate 3-R's targets.
