Location of event

Sociology meets Technology Law in this first national conference to be organised in India on the theme of “Privacy Law, Technology Policy and the Internet”, within the context of the EU-funded SET-DEV project.

It is only relatively recently that constitutional law in some countries has explicitly recognised the right of the individual to the free development of his or her personality. Part of this development has been attributed to an increased awareness caused by the appearance of new technologies and especially computers, digital devices and the Internet. This phenomenon of “Technology-driven law” is one which has gradually gathered pace over the past 40 years in Europe and the USA but its more recent arrival in India and other Asian states provides the main theme of this conference.

What values does India bring to Technology-driven law and policy and which values and legal principles is it importing wholesale?

In this conference European, Indian and other responses to technology policy, personality rights and Privacy and data protection law are considered from various dimensions by sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, lawyers, business and IT specialists.

About SET-DEV
SET-DEV (Science, Ethics and Technological Responsibility in Developing and Emerging Countries) is a project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme and the call SiS-2007- 1.2.2.4. “International dialogue: capacity building in developing countries launched by the EC DG RTD”. The project aims to support the research systems and to encourage a socialization of scientific and technological research (STR) in India and Kenya, enabling it to measure up to greatly changing societies.

SET-DEV is leaded by the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and participated by a consortium of 11 partners from India, Kenya and Europe. Project partners are engaged into multiple activities such as scientific networking, principles setting, study coordination, experimentation, and awareness raising initiatives in the purpose to bring science closer to society. The project began in March 2008 and will last 36 months, ending in February 2011.
