The G20’s commitment of November 2008 to contain protectionism looks effective. Is it? Moreover, it secures a new role for the WTO, whose legitimacy is dented by the Doha Round stalemate.

Will the multilateral trading system resist the twin pressure of a slower growth in the markets of advanced economies and of the multiplication of bilateral or regional free-trade areas, more or less WTO-compatible? What more should the EU do?
