Location of event

Latin America has long been regarded by many Europeans as a backwater, and of all the worlds major regions it certainly received the least attention. However, the global financial crisis is currently acting as a catalyst to change such perceptions.

Not only is Brazil a key emerging economy, but Latin America as a whole is becoming a new economic powerhouse. Should the Barroso II Commission and the newly elected European Parliament encourage the European industries to engage with Latin America’s markets and their natural resources? As far as business links are concerned, how could the Spanish and Portuguese majors help to encourage wider EU interest? What have been the Spanish Presidency’s successes over the past six months, and what key challenges remain unaddressed?

The high-level European Policy Summit, entitled ‘After the Spanish EU Presidency: Towards a new Latin America-EU partnership?’ will take place on the 29th of June 2010 and will wrap up the Spanish EU Presidency. Topics to be addressed include trade, innovation and foreign direct investment, geopolitical and regional cooperation, as well as energy security, oil markets and biofuels.

Friends of Europe will be organising this event with the support of Telefónica, the Real Instituto Elcano and the OECD Development Centre. This summit will be the perfect forum to communicate Latin American perspectives to a high-level international audience of European and Latin American policymakers, business leaders and civil society representatives.
