Landscape Structures, Functions and Management: Response to Global Ecological Change - 03.09.2010 - 06.09.2010

Changes in biosphere induced by global climatic development are apparent in many cases and hidden or latent in other cases. Ecological changes go across hierarchical levels structuring nature and landscape level integrates always several lines of phenomena manifested on lower scales. Challenges for scientific and consequently practical work are, e.g., the following: (1) re-valuation and/or re-interpretation of older studies on any complex changes based on long-term and widely spatial data sets in relation to new context of climate change, (2) search for spontaneous self-reorganizing capacity of systems in nature surrounded by human impacts as mechanisms how to sustain their vitality, (3) development of scientifically sound adaptive tools for landscapes under the press of climate change, (4) strategic decision making about aspects of land-use in the sense of sustainable development or sustainable retreat.

Usually ecological and economic studies are carried out separately. In particular, landscape ecology research deals with the relationships between patterns and processes whereas ecological economics focuses its attention strictly on the relationships between functions and values produced by them. Decision making approaches tied to evaluations of the environmental impact have been proposed in the past: e.g., the ecosystem services addresses calls for the explicit incorporation of economic valuations in ecological management decisions. We need wider and deeper implementation of techniques for economic appraisal and social assessment in order to reach balanced decisions about the overall acceptability of the ecological modifications. Landscape ecology and ecological economics when combined should generate solutions to adapt ecosystems/landscapes to human needs under the climatic changes challenge.

Future of Independent Clinical Research in Europe - 02.09.2010

The international conference will address the importance, but also the threats, of indpendent academic clinical research in Europe and will highlight problems related to the implementation of the European Directive on experimentation of medicinal products. Another objective is to discuss potential ethical problems of conducting clinical research and the barriers to conduct translational research requiring the collection and the use of human biological material and personal data. The conference will also address the need to consider appropriate funding for independent academic clinical research in Europe.

XIII European Symposium on Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour - 01.09.2010 - 04.09.2010

Basic components of studies on suicide (research, prevention, treatment) have undergone consistent progress, but given the peculiar nature of each one, their mutual dialogue and definitive exchange has proved to be scarce.

Inspiration of the 13th ESSSB is then to investigate possible modalities and paths of communication of these instances, favoring aggregation and interplay not only of single minds, but also at a more complex level of structurization of suicidology, with the ultimate scope of harmonizing its articulate development.

Corporate Responsibility and Global Challenges - 25.08.2010 - 27.08.2010

The conference is intended to provide a leading international forum for presentation and discussion of research in corporate responsibility and sustainability.

The fashionable language in CSR circles has for a while now centred on sustainability. However, one party’s idea of a sustainable strategy may easily conflict with other stakeholders’ priorities. The notion of sustainability seems under-examined, its meaning taken for granted. Further, as important as the long view is, there is a danger of other equally important markers of human development being sidelined, such as equity, meaning fair or just outcomes. Which begs the question ‘what is fair or just’?, and ‘who gets to decide what is equitable’?

The scope of the conference is interdisciplinary. We encourage contributions that focus both on single issues whether social, environmental, economic or technological, as well as contributions that focus on the challenges and opportunities where these streams seem to merge. We seek to develop nuanced knowledge and locally relevant practice. Such ambition requires perspectives that are critical, situated in the context of an evolving global dynamic.

Privacy and Identity Management for Life - 02.08.2010 - 06.08.2010

After the success of the 2009 PrimeLife/IFIP Summer School, the European project PrimeLife and IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing, Working Groups 9.2, 9.6/11.7 11.4, 11.6) will continue their joint cooperation. This year they will hold an International Summer School on the topic of Privacy and Identity Management for Emerging Internet Applications throughout a Person's Lifetime.

Emerging Internet Applications, such as Web 2.0 applications and cloud computing, increasingly pose privacy dilemmas. When they communicate over the Internet, individuals leave trails of personal data which may be stored for many years to come. In recent years, social network sites, where users tend to disclose very intimate personal details about their personal, social, and professional lives, have caused serious privacy concerns. The collaborative character of the Internet enables anyone to compose services and distribute information. Due to the low costs and technical advances of storage technologies, masses of personal data can easily be stored. Once disclosed, this data may be retained forever and be removed with difficulty. It has become hard for individuals to manage and control the release and use of information that concerns them. They may particularly find it difficult to eliminate outdated or unwanted personal information.

These developments raise substantial new challenges for personal privacy at the technical, social, ethical, regulatory, and legal levels:

* How can privacy be protected in emerging Internet applications such as collaborative scenarios and virtual communities?

* What frameworks and tools could be used to gain, regain and maintain informational self-determination and lifelong privacy?

International Climate Change Talks - 01.08.2010 - 06.08.2010

he UN Framework Convention on Climatic Change came about in 1992. It was rounded off with the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. Under the Kyoto Protocol, industrialised signatories made a commitment for the 2008-2012 period to reduce yearly emissions by at least 5% in relation to 1990, the starting year. Negotiations towards post-2012 climate policy began in Montreal in 2005, and were intensified in Bali, 2007. These negotiations were expected to conclude in Copenhagen in 2009. In spite of progress made, the positions of the Parties remained too distant to enable them to draw up a new climate policy. Outside of the Copenhagen agreement, it was agreed to further negotiations. Arrangements were made in April 2010 concerning the working programme. In June 2010 (AWG-KP 12 & AWG-LCA 10) basic negotiations recommenced. In the second half of 2010, there will be two further intersession meetings, with the possibility of a High-Level Meeting to prepare for the climate conference in Cancun, Mexico.

The negotiations will focus on the central issue of the contributions made by both industrialised and developing countries to the global effort to reduce emissions, and how the latter are financed. Other issues will also be dealt with, particularly flexible mechanisms (carbon market), adapting to climate changes, strengthening capacities, technologies and measures to halt deforestation in tropical regions.

In view of the Copenhagen experience, the Cancun Conference is not expected to result in a conclusive end to the work. The objective remains to advance as much as possible in certain areas, while aiming for a binding agreement by 2011.

In the build-up to the climate conference, 2 or 3 intersession meetings will be organised over the course of 2010:

* Ad-hoc Working Group Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) 13 & Ad-hoc Working Group Long term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA) 11

* AWG-KP 14 & AWG-LCA 12

* High-Level Meeting of AWG-KP & AWG-LCA
